Special thanks to the USP Measurement and Data Quality Expert Committee and AstraZeneca authors for their recent peer-reviewed article in Analytical Chemistry titled “Ongoing Analytical Procedure Performance Verification Using a Risk-Based Approach to Determine Performance Monitoring Requirements”. The article unfolds stage 3 of the analytical procedure life cycle (APLC), described in USP’s general chapter <1220>. It highlights tools that can be used for procedure performance monitoring (e.g. different types of control charts) and discusses how risk assessment can guide the extent of routine monitoring based on procedure complexity, intended purpose, and knowledge about process/procedure variability.
