Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier says he will "always be ready" to play, whether that is at left-back or right-back.

The 33-year-old is in Germany preparing for his fourth major tournament with England at Euro 2024.

While the majority of his career has been spent as a right-back, his versatility and strong competition for places there for the Three Lions has brought him also out to the left-hand side.

With questions over Luke Shaw's fitness and no other traditional left-back in the 26-man squad, Trippier may have to be deployed in that position once again.

"It doesn't matter [which position]. If I play, if I don't play, if I play right-back, left-back, I'll always be ready," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"I like to bomb forward and put crosses in, but sometimes I need to adjust my game and maybe I'll be more defensive [at left back] and join in more. But for me it is just the same - the distances, checking your left shoulder instead of your right, the fine details.

"If it's left-back, no problem, I'll give my best. But if I'm not playing, also the type of character that I am is that I'm always supportive of my team because ultimately, if you're not playing, we all want the same goal."

"As I have said before, it is a privilege to wear the shirt [for England] whether I'm at left-back or right-back."

Former Wolves goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26.

Sarkic signed from Aston Villa in July 2020 and left to join Millwall last summer.

During his time at Molineux, he represented the under-21s as well as the first-team, making three senior appearances during the 2022-23 season.

He also made several appearances between the sticks in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs, said: "The news has come as a massive shock to all of us. It is unbelievably heartbreaking and everyone at Wolves is devastated to hear of Mati’s passing.

"He was a wonderful goalkeeper, but as a person – first and foremost – he was loved by everyone. Mati was such a popular guy around the club and always had a smile on his face. He worked hard, and he was so personable, so polite and friendly to every member of staff at Compton.

"For everybody who knew him really well, it is such sad news to hear and it is hard to accept that he is no longer with us."

Nottingham Forest said former striker Kevin Campbell "will always be remembered" by everyone at the club.

Campbell's death, aged 54, was announced on Saturday morning after a short illness.

He spent three seasons at Forest between 1995 and 1998, scoring 35 goals in 97 appearances.

Former goalkeeper Mark Crossley, who played alongside Campbell, said: "Life can be so cruel at times.

"Absolutely devastated with news of my ex-Forest team-mate Kevin Campbell's passing. A true gentleman, a great player, a shining light of a dressing room, fun-loving guy. Thoughts are with all his family and friends. RIP mate."

The club added: "Our thoughts are with Kevin's friends and family during this difficult time."

Everton have paid tribute to Kevin Campbell, "one of the club's most popular and much-loved" players, who has passed away aged 54.

The former striker joined Everton on loan in March 1999, scoring nine times in their final eight Premier League games to help them avoid relegation.

He was rewarded with a permanent deal that summer, and stayed for more than five seasons.

Everton said: "Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the death of our former striker Kevin Campbell at the age of just 54.

"Not just a true Goodison Park hero and icon of the English game, but an incredible person as well - as anyone who ever met him will know. RIP, Super Kev."

Campbell was the club's first black captain in the top-flight and he became an enduringly popular figure for scoring the winner in a 1-0 Merseyside derby win at Anfield in September 1999. It was to be 22 years before the Toffees won there again, ensuring his permanent place in the affections of the blue half of Merseyside.

He is Everton’s fifth highest Premier League scorer with 45 goals, netting 51 times in 164 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith "there will be a lot of sad ex-team mates" following the death of Kevin Campbell aged 54.

Campbell was a boyhood Arsenal supporter and a product of the club's youth set-up after joining aged 15.

The striker went on to make his senior debut for the club in 1988, following loan spells with Leyton Orient and Leicester City.

He scored nine goals in 22 appearances for Arsenal during their title-winning 1990-91 campaign.

Campbell then helped the Gunners win the FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.

His Arsenal career ended in 1995, when he moved to Nottingham Forest. In all he played 228 times for our first team, scoring 59 goals.

"To have the career that he did was just fantastic," said Smith on Sky Sports. "He was ambitious and driven because he wanted to do well.

"You see the photos with his big smile and that was his personality. He was warm hearted and popular with all the boys.

"He was a South London boy who made good and always appreciated it. He never took it for granted to be where he was. He carried his work ethic throughout his whole career.

"When you have played with him and shared a dressing room with him, then you would never forget him. There will be a lot of ex-team mates of his who will be very sad.

"It is just a tragic day."

Midfielder Adam Lallana says it feels "surreal" after rejoining Southampton on a one-year deal.

The 36-year-old, who left Brighton at the end of his contract last month, will go back to the Saints having last played for the side 10 years ago.

He began his career at the south coast club, joining the academy at the age of 12 and went on to make 265 first-team appearances, scoring 60 goals, before leaving to join Liverpool in 2014.

Lallana becomes Southampton's first signing of the summer transfer window and the club will be hoping to use his Premier League experience having secured their promotion back to the top flight from the Championship.

"It does feel surreal, but it's an opportunity I'm extremely grateful for and I'm looking forward to," the England international said.

"When I started speaking to Russell [Martin] and understood there was a little bit of interest, something straight away felt right in my head and in my heart.

"I'm extremely happy to come back to where it all started. Although it sounds like a bit of a fairytale, in my head there's still a job to do and I'm really confident I've still got a lot to give to this football club."

Saints boss Martin: "I'm delighted that we could bring Adam back home to where it all began for him. Adam has the DNA of this club running through him and brings vital experience as we prepare for the Premier League.

"We're going to need everyone to play a part again this coming season and Adam helps us create real depth and know-how in midfield."

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has been "surprised" by the leadership of the young players in the England squad.

Euro 2024 will be the right-back's fourth major tournament with his national side, having been called up for the past two Wold Cups in 2018 and 2022, as well as the last European Championship in 2021.

At 33, he is one of the more experienced players in a young Three Lions squad that has travelled to Germany.

"I've been there for a long time now, so I came through the transition from when Harty [Joe Hart] was here, Gaz Cahill, the leaders of the group," Trippier told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"You don't have to be my age to be a leader. You can be 18, 19, 20, and lead in different ways. It doesn't have to just be the older players.

"But we understand that there's so many new faces here, so it's our responsibility - myself and the older players - to make all the younger players feel at ease."

Of Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the tournament, 12 players are at a major tournament for the first time, but Trippier has been impressed by the younger members.

"People forget how young Declan [Rice] is, for example. He's very vocal," he added.

"You have Bukayo [Saka], who is so young and still is very vocal. Even Cole [Palmer] - people might not see it, but all the young players, they're vocal and on the training pitch, which is really good to see.

"A lot of them have surprised me. I'm very happy for them and they have settled in very quickly."

Jordan Pickford feels his experiences battling relegation with Everton can help England at Euro 2024.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper is set to be number one for his nation once again when they kick off their tournament against Serbia on Sunday.

Pickford has been a key player for his club during recent struggles that have seen the Toffees battling to avoid relegation in the past three Premier League seasons.

"There's a lot of positives and negatives at Everton. You learn from those experiences," he said.

"You've got lads here like Jude Bellingham, who has just won the Champions League. In the 2022-23 season, we [Everton] were fighting for our lives to stay in the Premier League.

"All of those experiences bed in together [in order] to be successful in a tournament, [with] the highs and lows throughout. Those rises - that's where you have got to be mentally strong. That's something I am. My mentality, I think, is key."

Leicester City look to be nearing the end of their hunt for a new manager after reportedly whittling down their targets to Steve Cooper, Graham Potter and Carlos Corberan.

Former Foxes goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell has been giving his thoughts on the final three on the When You're Smiling podcast: "All three of them are top coaches," Stowell said. "They all have their positives.

"Steve Cooper worked on a budget down the road [at the City Ground]. What you have got to do is take out the fact that he worked for Nottingham Forest. For any Leicester fans out there, it should be Steve Cooper 'the coach'.

"He did an amazing job keeping Forest in the Premier League, and that might be the case with Leicester City this season with the [impending] points deduction. He would be working with a squad that is limited in terms of financial restraints.

"What Graham Potter achieved at Brighton [was brilliant], but going to Chelsea is a poisoned chalice - who doesn't get sacked at Chelsea? So you can take that out of the equation.

"What Carlos Corberan has done under Marco Bielsa at Leeds United, and Huddersfield and Olympiakos [is also brilliant].

"These are top-grade managers. They will have gone to the training ground at Seagrave and seen the facilities. The squad is still good enough. The owner, Top [Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha], is an amazing owner to work for.

"If those three want the job, it's a luxury for Leicester City."

We asked for your views on Crystal Palace's first summer signing Chadi Riad and whether you think he will make a positive impact.

Here are some of your views:

Sam: It's good to keep promising young players coming in! This seems like a good price and if Guehi has a strong Euros it is likely we'll be selling him for a strong profit. It looks like a smart bit of business to start the summer.

Luca: This is a great start to the window. Young, promising, La Masia-grown centre-back for a decent price. Good for squad depth. Onwards and upwards.

Don: It will be interesting to see if signing Riad is to enable Guehi to be sold or if he is intended to replace Tomkins on the bench. Palace could start next season with the most talented squad they have had since the Wright and Bright days unless forced to sell the likes of Olise, Eze, Wharton and Guehi. At least if they do, FFP won’t be a worry.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford hopes he is "appreciated" after being selected for his fourth major tournament with England.

The 30-year-old made his senior international debut in November 2017 and had established himself as the Three Lions' number one by the time of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

It was in the last 16 of that tournament that Pickford helped England to their first World Cup penalty shootout victory after saving from Colombia's Carlos Bacca.

He also played every match as Gareth Southgate's side reached the final of the delayed Euro 2020.

"It's 61 caps now for me. I work hard off the pitch, and on the pitch I do everything right to the best of my ability," he said.

"I always want to improve. I'm 30 now and I keep improving every day. If there's anything I can learn, I want to keep trying my best to improve.

"That's what keeps me pushing. That's why it's my fourth major tournament. That's why I have won Everton's player of the year for the past three seasons. I know what I'm doing and I know I keep getting better.

"Hopefully I'm appreciated and hopefully this tournament is a success."

Despite Euro 2024 being his fourth consecutive major tournament, the shotstopper is looking forward to this competition as much as the previous three.

"It's excitement. It's always exciting to be a part of the England squad at a major tournament. It's quality to be at my fourth one. I've got to keep performing, which I think I have done.

    "It's a major honour."

England's Euro 2024 chances could hinge on how they make use of their attacking riches, but concerns linger about the team's defensive vulnerability.

Harry Maguire has been a mainstay in the team but misses this tournament through injury, and Gareth Southgate looks set to pick 23-year-old Marc Guehi as his left-sided centre-half for Sunday's opening game against Serbia (20:00 BST).

With only 11 caps, Guehi lacks the profile and international exposure of England's more established defenders such as John Stones and Kyle Walker - but he is highly thought of in the England camp.

One of Guehi's biggest strengths is his calm nature on the ball and how he deals with high-pressure situations.

In the Premier League, his passing accuracy of 87.2% last season was higher than Maguire and highly rated Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who did not make the final 26-man Euros squad.

For England, that stat goes up to 95.1% - better than Maguire and Stones.

Guehi is also quick. His top speed in the 2023-24 Premier League season of 33.92km/h ranked him in the top 30 centre-backs in the league - perhaps not the quickest of the lot, but faster than Lewis Dunk, Stones and Maguire.

Southgate has been introducing Guehi gradually, along with a number of young players, but he has emerged as the centre-back to step in if Stones or Maguire are unavailable.

He has been a key player and occasional captain for Crystal Palace over the past three seasons and he is a former England Under-21 skipper.

Guehi's relatively young age, Premier League experience, and his ability to play in the left-sided centre-back position means that he is highly admired by many teams.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has played with Guehi since they were both in the Blues academy. They were team-mates for Palace in the Premier League, when Gallagher was on loan at Selhurst Park, and now they have united on the international stage with England.

"He will be brilliant if he does [start in the Serbia match]," Gallagher said. "Top guy, top player."

"I couldn't be happier if he started some games at the tournament. He has been brilliant for Crystal Palace and England when he has played. He is more than ready, for sure.

"He is very professional, a great leader as well. I think he has got everything you need to be a top defender."

Fulham have rejected a second bid from Bayern Munich for Joao Palhinha.

The Cottagers have knocked back two offers from Bayern this week as the German giants rekindle their long-standing interest in the midfielder.

Personal terms are not expected to be a problem if a deal can be struck between the clubs.

Bayern have returned for the Portugal international, on duty for his country at Euro 2024, after their initial move for him collapsed last summer, despite Palhinha having a medical.

He was given permission to fly to Germany on the understanding a replacement would have to be signed before the transfer would be approved.

But Fulham were unable to bring in anyone before the transfer deadline and the player had to return to Craven Cottage.

Bayern have come back for the 28-year-old with new boss Vincent Kompany looking to return them to the top of the Bundesliga.

They finished third last season, behind unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen and runners-up Stuttgart - a failure to win the first time since 2012.

Leicester City's Mads Hermansen has refused to compare himself to Kasper Schmeichel and vowed to be his own man.

The goalkeeper is preparing for Denmark's Euro 2024 opener against Slovenia on Sunday. He is likely to be back-up to Schmeichel, having emulated him after winning the Championship with Leicester this season.

Schmeichel went on to lift the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield with the Foxes during a 11-year spell at King Power Stadium.

But, on the eve of the European Championship, with Denmark facing England next Thursday in Group C, Hermansen dismissed any focus on wanting to emulate Schmeichel.

"I haven't looked at what Kasper has done or what I can do," he said. "Every Danish goalkeeper admires Kasper.

"He's had an amazing career, both for Leicester and the national team, but it's not like I compare myself. I try to go out there every week and every single game to deliver a good performance.

"When I go back to Denmark for some holiday at some point, the achievement of how big it really is [winning the Championship] will hit me.

"It was such a difficult league, so much hard work and travel. At some point, all of the emotions will just hit me. When I look back, I am impressed with myself, my team-mates and the whole club.

"It is quite hard to explain but this year has been unbelievable and very special to me."

The threat of a points deduction remains a reality for the Foxes, having been charged with breaching profit and sustainability rules for the three years ending in the 2022-23 season.

They could be in breach again if they are not compliant by 30 June and face the prospect of starting next season on minus points.

But Hermansen - who conceded the fewest goals in the Championship last season - 41 goals in 46 games - remains focused on the pitch rather than on issues out of his control.

"There is nothing we can do," said last summer's signing from Brondby. "We have so many good people here who manage the situation and, no matter the challenge, we will take it on to the pitch.

"The Premier League is an amazing level with so many good teams. It will take a lot from us, but we will go out with the same mentality every time. That is our mindset as a team."
